SEPTEMBER 12-14: A NEW ROAD 26

 

“A New Road” is a weekend of support for men and women who have been widowed within the last three years. This retreat is sponsored by the Ministry Team for Outreach of the SC Synod, ELCA, and is designed to help participants deal with the transition to a new way of living. An impressive lineup of presenters will deal with keys to coping, legal matters, wills and probate, and a discussion of “Plan B for My Life.” Registration deadline is August 18. SEPTEMBER 25:  Open forum on draft Social Statement on Human Sexuality.

Everyone is invited to this forum, which will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Columbia, SC
on Thursday, September 25, from 1:30 – 4:00 pm.  At this forum we will listen to one another and listen for the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit in addressing as ELCA Lutherans, how we understand God’s gift of human sexuality.

SEPTEMBER 25-28: SC VIA DE CRISTO EVENT SCHEDULED


SC Via de Cristo Co-ed Weekend # 9 is scheduled for September 25-28 at the D. Moody Gunter Camp and Retreat Center in Batesburg, South Carolina (more information can be found at

DASHER DINNER 2008 - Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of South Carolina will honor three former bishops for their service to, and support of, Lutheran Campus Ministry. Come help us honor Bishops James S. Aull, Herman W. Cauble, and David A. Donges at the Capstone House on the USC Campus (plenty of nearby parking). OCTOBER 11: INSTALLATION OF BISHOP, VICE PRESIDENT AND ASSISTANTS TO THE BISHOP OF THE SC SYNOD

      TIME: 2:00 pm

      PLACE: Wiles Chapel, Newberry College, Newberry, SC

On May 18, 2008, The Rev. Dr. Herman R. Yoos, III was elected to serve a six-year term as Bishop of the SC Synod, ELCA, and Mr. Michael S. Kohn was elected to serve as Vice President of the synod. Since that time, we have learned that the Assistants to the Bishop will be The Rev. Virginia "Ginny" Aebischer, who currently serves as pastor of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church in West Columbia, SC, and The Rev. Melvin E . "Mel" Amundson, who currently serves as Assistant to the Bishop in the SC Synod. Join us for the installation service for these four servants of the Church on October 11 in Newberry, SC.

 

OCTOBER 19: SIXTH ANNUAL LUTHERAN YOUTH REFORMATION PARTY

Attention, Midlands area church youth groups! Save the date of October 19th as you plan your fall calendar. We will once again gather for an evening of fun and fellowship, and friendly competition for the coveted “Marty” trophy. This event will be held at St. David’s Lutheran Church in West Columbia from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on October 19th. Reservation letters will be mailed in late August. Thomas G. Long is the Bandy Professor of Preaching at Candler School of Theology at
Emory University. A Presbyterian minister, Tom has served churches in Georgia and
New Jersey. He has taught preaching for over thirty years--at Erskine Theological Seminary,
Columbia Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and, since 2000, at Candler.
Tom is the author of textbooks on preaching and worship, collections of sermons, and biblical
commentaries on Matthew and Hebrews. His most recent books are Testimony: Talking
Ourselves into Being Christian
and The Witness of Preaching, Second Edition. His book,

JANUARY 7-25, 2009: WANT TO GO TO ISRAEL AND PALESTINE ON A STUDY TOUR? HERE’S YOUR CHANCE!

Encounter Israel & Palestine: The geography, customs, politics, and languages, amidst the religious and cultural diversity. LEADER: Dr. Monte Luker, Professor of Hebrew Scriptures at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. In January 2009 Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary offers a cross-cultural immersion in Israel and Palestine. In addition to the biblical sites all the way from Mount Hermon in the north to the Red Sea in the south, we shall meet with Dr. Mitri Raheb of the Lutheran church in Bethlehem, staff of Augusta Victoria Hospital, the pastors of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jerusalem, Archbishop Abuna Elias Chacour in the Galilee, as well as Druze villagers in the Golan Heights, Jewish settlers, and kibbutzniks. Seminarians who take the course for cross-cultural credit apply to the Contextual Education department to receive their $600 scholarship which they mail to the Jerusalem Center for Biblical Studies.
